I was introducing a speaker to a women’s organization. The presentation was about critical processes that business owners need to implement for long-term growth and success.
Somewhere along the introduction, I mentioned that I had not set my goals for the year.
The problem wasn’t that I didn’t have goals, it was that I didn’t have a system.
For any ambitious dreamers out there–especially entrepreneurs–setting goals is not only important, but it’s also essential.
Having a reliable goal-setting system can be the difference between success and failure.
And here’s the thing, nothing magical happens when we make our final countdown into the new year.
However, the new year is a perfect opportunity for a reset to think about not just hitting revenue targets and business milestones, but
achieving better balance and bringing more awareness to every area of your life, both personally and professionally.
So how can you set yourself up for success with intentional goals in 2023 – and more importantly, how can you turn your goals into action?
How to Set Business Goals for Success in 2023

When it comes to setting goals with a system to help you achieve them, here’s what I focus on first:
1. Review the previous year.
Reviewing the last year’s accomplishments and challenges can help you to understand what worked, what didn’t work, and what changes need to be made. This is also a great time to write down lessons learned. When you’re done with your review process, it’s time for reflection. This is where you take all of that information from the previous step and reflect on how you want to move forward. What areas need to be improved? And what boundaries do you need to set for you to keep moving forward? What things will you say yes to? What will you say no to? Reflecting on these questions will help you determine the direction that your goals should take.
2. Consider your big-picture vision.
What is the big-picture vision for the life you want to create and live in? Setting goals will help you to get clear on this vision and have a roadmap for how to make it happen. Consider your big-picture vision for both your personal life and your business. Your goals will reflect this vision and help you to achieve it. Your big-picture vision will also serve as a filter for the things that you say yes to and no to.
3. Define what success means to you.
Last week I attended
Imaging USA in Nashville, Tennessee, and one of the presenters shared something that resonated with me. Success = Balance. The system that I use for setting my goals helps me create balance in all areas of my life. To me, that is success.
I always want to make sure that my goals are not only focused on hitting business targets, but also ensuring I’m creating balance in my life, taking care of myself, enjoying my hobbies, and doing things that I love with the people I love.
These three steps–reviewing the previous year, considering your big-picture vision and defining what success means to you–are integral parts of my goal-setting system and will help you set meaningful goals for 2023.
