How to Have a Great Brand Photoshoot | Behind The Scenes

Let me take you behind the scenes of a recent personal branding photoshoot we had at our Medway, MA brand photography studio.


Jen came to me in the process of updating her website and was ready to take her brand to the next level. She knew that the perfect imagery combined with some amazing messaging could do just that.


Her website was our number one goal for capturing on brand images.


It was also a goal to capture photos that could be used for social media platforms, speaking engagements, workshops, an email avatar and signature, and other marketing materials.


Based on Jen’s responses to her brand questionnaire and brand color palette, we knew that a soft and natural look would be the best way to go. We wanted her to feel comfortable in front of the camera and for her brand images to feel relaxed and authentic.


For the wardrobe styling, we chose earth tones and natural fabrics that would compliment Jen’s warm personality and her brand’s visual identity.

Because Jen is a Mindful Leadership Coach what better way to discuss that on her website than to have some imagery of her teaching a workshop. On our shot list, was a styled set design to capture images where her attendees could get a visual of what they can expect, how she teaches and the information she shares.

We wanted to also personally reflect Jen, so we created a few shots of her practicing yoga.

She also brought in personal props for styling, and we added other styled set designs, like this lifestyle desk option, that conveyed her brand messaging.

For our last frame of photos, we went across the street to Choate Park to wrap up her branding session. Jen is also a nature-lover, so I’m happy that we had great weather to venture out.

Jen’s images turned out amazing because we were able to really capture images that reflected the uniqueness of her messaging and business. 


Your brand photography can create the feeling behind your brand. 


As a small business owner, it is important to align your brand’s visual identity and create images that reflect your unique story and message. A great way to do this is by having a personal branding photoshoot. This will help capture your personality and the essence of your business.


When planning your personal branding photoshoot, it is important to know how you want to show up in your photos and the clients that you want to attract.


Some things to consider include:


-What are your core values and what do you want your brand to represent?


-Who is your target audience?


-How do you want your brand to feel? Choose brand words


Some possible feelings that you may want to evoke with your branding photography could be: calming, empowering, sophisticated, relatable, or fun. You may also want to consider words that represent your brand’s personality. Some examples could be: passionate, friendly, and trustworthy.


Plan Your Brand Photoshoot 


You are the only one with your brand story and your brand photoshoot needs to reflect that.


That is why it is so important that you plan before your photoshoot.


As a brand photographer, I always meet with our clients before branding sessions so that we can discuss planning in order to ensure their personality and their brand goals will be 100% reflected in their images.


Important questions to ask yourself before your branding session:


  • Will your photos be used for your website?
  • What offers do your photos need to reflect?
  • What pages do you need photos for?
  • Do you need a wide banner image?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • How do you want to show up in your brand photos?
  • What words describe your brand?


Through planning, when photoshoot days arrive, I am very clear on what messaging goal we are trying to accomplish. With my checklist in hand, I am ready to deliver brand images that directly support the business goals of my clients.


Have a great brand photoshoot.


You are the special sauce of your brand and that is what makes you the perfect person to work with your potential clients.


Be yourself in your photos. Have fun and let your true unique personality shine through your brand photos.


These images are really going to create the feelings behind your words, represent the aspirational identity of what your potential clients want, and allow you to connect with your audience.


“Teamwork makes the dream work” which is why I suggest hiring some professionals. Have a team do your hair, makeup, wardrobe, styling, and photos.


That leaves you free to enjoy your day and really be free to let your personality shine.
