Are You Building Your Business By Default or Design?

Why Building a More Thoughtful, Intentional Business Is Essential to Elevating Your Brand

A few years ago, my husband and I shared the amazing experience of a vacation in Maui. I can’t recall exactly what happened, but for some reason, we had to arrive a day earlier than we’d originally planned.

(I know—so sad, right?)

Arriving a day earlier meant that we needed to make changes to our hotel accommodations. Because it was a busy season, we’d have to stay in a different room for our first night. But that was no big deal—we were on our way to Maui, and that was all that mattered.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted warmly with Alohas and adorned with our beautiful leis. Our luggage was whisked away, and we were offered beverages and escorted to the front desk to check in.

To our surprise, one more room change had been made.

We’d been upgraded to an oceanside suite. What?!!

When we walked into our room, we were welcomed with champagne, a happy anniversary card, and soon after a phone call checking in to welcome us and ask if there was anything that we needed. I was completely blown away by the entire experience.

Every single day felt as though we were being welcomed and greeted for the first time.

It was like The Ritz Carlton had thoughtfully and intentionally designed an experience just for me. Every little detail was simply amazing.

And while you may not own a hotel in Maui, I think this is something we can all learn from as business owners.

Are you building your business by default or by design?

When we build our business by default, or on autopilot, we may neglect important details that make our processes feel more intentional and strategic.

On the contrast, when we build a business by design, we put thought and intention into every element of our brand—which helps communicate our values and leaves our clients feeling special, the way I did at The Ritz Carlton.

Our website, photos, messaging, client experience, and added touches all come together to influence the value your clients feel they’re getting from your brand.

In the case of our hotel, these little details upgraded what I expected to be a comfortable stay, into an unforgettable stay. I got a real luxury vacation—one that I couldn’t wait to go home and tell all my friends about—because The Ritz Carlton made it clear that they valued my experience.

Building your business by design starts with setting clear goals and keeping your ideal client in mind.

A business built by design, rather than by default, will allow space and time for you to work on your business—not just in it.

A business built by design, rather than by default, will have repeatable, intentional processes and systems in place for a memorable client experience.

A business built by design will skyrocket your revenue and grow your profits because your clients will look forward to the next chance to work with you (and rave about you to their friends).
