What to Wear for Engagement Photos

It’s time for another Wedding Wednesday post and I think this is a good one because it’s fall engagement season and what to wear for engagement photos is a hot topic.

Let’s face it, you want to look beautiful, feel good, and confidently show up beautiful and smashing for your engagement session photos. Yes?! Of course, you do, and I want you to look and feel amazing as well.

Here are a few tips to consider as you think about what to wear for engagement photos.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos

First things first, let’s start with the ladies. I recommend starting with the ladies first because once you figure out what you’re wearing, selecting a complementary look for the guys is easy peasy.

Tip #1: You can choose one look that you love, or you can add a second look to mix things up a bit. Consider a casual outfit and a more dressy outfit. Bonus, because you’re all dressed up, head out for a nice dinner after your photos.

Tip #2: No need to be matchy-matchy. Complementary looks are best!

Tip #3: Shop your closet first! Yes, go take a look in your closet and pull out your favorites. You know the favorites that you’d wear on repeat for date nights.

Tip #4: Okay, so you’ve worn your favorite on repeat too many times and you want something different. I get it! I suggest heading to your favorite anchor store or stores. Your anchor store is the store where you could walk in with your eyes closed and pick out your favorite color and size and you know it’s gonna look good on you. Choose outfits that fit you well.

Tip #5: If shopping your closet and taking a trip to your favorite store doesn’t help because who can find something when they need to. That only happens when you don’t need to buy anything. Right?! There are some great places online to consider, and a few of my brides have chosen Rent the Runway and Lulus! I can also say that I’ve had great experiences with Rent the Runway!

Tip #6: Give your outfit a trial run one-two weeks before your shoot to ensure that you love what you’ll be wearing.

Tip #7: Don’t forget about your hair and makeup. Professional hair and makeup will look great for the camera, and you’ll feel even more amazing after having pampered yourself.

Okay, there you have it! Those are my tips for what to wear for your engagement photos.

I hope that you enjoyed this edition of Wedding Wednesday and find these tips helpful as you get ready for your engagement shoot.

10 Questions to Create Your Wedding Day Timeline

Happy Wednesday! After sharing why having a wedding day timeline is important with you last week, today I thought I’d share the 10 questions to create your wedding day timeline that your photographer should ask you to begin planning a stress-free wedding day.

Having a wedding day timeline is important, and asking the right questions to prepare that timeline is even more important.

Every wedding day is different for various reasons. One couple might have a small intimate backyard wedding, another might not have a wedding party, and another couple might have a 200 plus person guest list. After having photographed 100 weddings, I have experienced all of these scenarios and many, many more.

Today, I’m sharing 10 Questions to Create Your Wedding Day Timeline, but there are many more questions to ask.

Knowing the right questions to ask each couple based on the needs for their wedding day is essential.

Because every couple’s day is different, I have a list of about 30 Questions that I ask to help prepare their wedding day timeline.

Today, I’m sharing my top 10 Questions to ask to help prepare your wedding day timeline.

Greek Orthodox Wedding | Hilary + Apostolos

It’s Tuesday, and I’m delighted to share a few favorite moments from Hilary and Apostolos’ intimate Greek Orthodox wedding this past weekend.

Fall is my favorite season, and the colors were brilliant on Saturday. We haven’t yet reached the peak of the season yet, and it’s already breathtaking in many places like Newburyport, one of the settings for this sweet couple’s wedding day.

Hilary and Apostolos are two beautiful, gentle, and kind people. It was such a pleasure to be with them on their wedding day.

He loves her creativity, intelligence, and kindness. She loves his sense of humor and imagination.

Hilary has such a gracefulness about her, and let me also tell you that Apostolos has some serious dance moves.

The day started with me first going to see the guys for photos at a hotel not far from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. They enjoyed a toast and opening gifts from the groom before heading out to take some group photos.

After spending some time with the guys, I headed out to see the ladies and meet a few of Hilary’s favorite pets. She loves animals and calls herself a cat lady. Apostolos happily agrees and calls himself a cat dad. I love it!!

I got to meet two of her dogs and cats, and her sweet cat, Barbara.

Hilary also had personalized jewelry boxes with each bridesmaids’ name monogrammed on the outside to hold the beautiful bracelets that she also gave to them as gifts.

Before driving to the church, when enjoyed the fall air and a few photos of Hilary and her bridesmaids along with her parents.

Wedding Ceremony at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

Their wedding ceremony was at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Amesbury, MA. It was my first time photographing a Greek Orthodox wedding, and the ceremony was beautiful.

Apostolos’ little brother did a wonderful job standing with his brother, and I love the happiness that was all over his face as he watched Apostolos gleam as his beautiful bride walked down the aisle.

Wedding Reception at Vasa Waterfront Kitchen and Bar in Salisbury, MA

The reception was at Vasa Waterfront Kitchen and Bar in Salisbury, MA. Their wedding day was intimate, warm, and joyful as they celebrated with their closest family and friends. At the wedding reception, Hilary’s dad gave the sweetest toast. He said that their family seemed to be getting smaller, but on Saturday it felt as though it was growing again. Beautiful!!!!

Hilary and Apostolos, it was an honor to celebrate with you on your wedding day! You two are lovely together and it has been great getting to know you! It was hard to say goodbye on Saturday, so I’m sending another big hug your way!! xo, Shawon

Why Every Couple Should Have a Wedding Day Photo Timeline

It’s Wedding Wednesday – yay! Today, I’m sharing some tips from my experience as a wedding photographer and why every couple should have a wedding day photo timeline.

A free wedding day photo timeline that every couple needs to have a stress free wedding day by Shawon Davis.

One of the key essentials of any wedding day is the wedding day timeline. As a wedding photographer, one of my responsibilities is to help my couples create a wedding day photo timeline. Having a wedding day photo timeline is one way to ensure that your day will run as smooth as possible when it comes to getting the pictures that you want.

As an experienced wedding photographer, I know how much time it will take for a family photo list consisting of 10 photos or 20 photos, how much time you’d need for getting hair and makeup done and what options you have if you’re still deciding whether or not to have a first look.

Knowing the timing of things is important. I have experienced 100 wedding days, and counting, that has only added to my ability to help my couples create a thoughtful and well-planned wedding day timeline.

I recently told one of my couples that if this wedding photographer gig doesn’t work out, I’ll consider becoming a wedding planner. I kid, I kid.

But honestly, I love the wedding day timeline planning process! It’s when all of the details seem real. Walking through your day is the best!

About two-three months before their wedding date, my couples will receive a wedding day questionnaire from me. This questionnaire is about all of the details of their day to help me put together a draft of their timeline.

After I have a draft prepared, the three of us will have a video call to walk through their day.

When my couples approve their photo timeline, I share the photo timeline with the venue coordinator and event planner to make sure that we are all in sync.

Because of the timeline, my couples will know what time I’m arriving, what time hair and makeup should be complete, what time flowers need to arrive at the getting ready location, and when we should have the beautiful bride get into her gown (one of my favorite parts of the day).

Having a wedding day photo timeline is essential when it comes to having your day run as smooth as possible. As a bonus, I always try to add in buffers of 5 minutes here and there for small hiccups and to also give my couples time to breathe and enjoy their day. It goes by fast!

I LOVE being a resource for my brides and I want their day to be as stress-free as possible. Today I’m sharing a free timeline with you!

Enjoy!

xo,

Shawon

I thought I would be a history teacher. That was my dream. I got married, became a mom, homeschooled my kids for 10 years, and realized memories were slipping away from me too quickly. I picked up a camera and started documenting my loved ones like crazy. I watched my life change-these photos were a gift to others. They grew our family roots deeper. I ended up making history myself.
